I decided to continue with my approach of doodling and drawing while listening, attempting to visualize timelines, write words that stick out, look for patterns, or process the information in the podcast.
Data Vizzie and Data Literacy Questions
I chose a new data visualization for this week to focus on and analyze through the lens of data literacy from class.
I chose to analyze this NYC Election Voting Map from **https://www.thecity.nyc/,** who describe themselves on their website as “…a local independent newsroom covering breaking news, investigative and service journalism in New York City.”
I subscribe to their daily newsletter and was interested in analyzing the following map they linked to after the 2024 US Presidential Election last week.

Below I’m answering the Data Literacy Questions linked on the Class Github: Notes on Data Literacy
- What is the source of the data?
- It’s noted that this is not from official election results but what results is it using is not clear at least from a first glance. It does give a source in terms of names for the graph and data.
- The chart says *“mapped with unofficial election results. Design & Development by Sujin Shin, Data by Haidee Chu”
- I was able to find both of their roles and stories on the city website
- From the first sentence in the article that’s linked with the map it says “Democratic nominee Kamala Harris won New York City over Republican Donald Trump, according to unofficial results from the city Board of Elections, gaining just under 68% of the vote with 98% counted.”
- So from what I can tell the information is from unofficial results from the city Board of Elections
-
I was able to find the official results page for NYC here
-
And also at the top the unofficial results was a link to the unofficial results for NYC
-
From that link I found the full unofficial election night results from New York State
- Here I was finally able to find more detailed information on how this data is collected and updated and what it means by “unofficial”
- Statement on the Unofficial Nature of Election Night Results from NY State Board of Elections
- The unofficial election night results displayed on this website are based on the unofficial results reported to us by each County Board of Elections and as such, are posted on the web as a convenience to the public. New York State Election Law requires a complete recanvass of all votes cast during Early Voting and on Election Day and the canvass of all valid early mail, absentee, military/overseas, special, and affidavit (provisional) ballots before any election results can be certified. Please remember that initial election night results may change as all valid ballots are processed and counted in the days following Election Day and county boards upload updated results. Once all ballot counting tasks have been completed (usually within 15 days for a primary and within 25 days for a general election), each County Board certifies their respective election results pursuant to and in accordance with the applicable sections of New York State Election Law (see NYS Election Law, Sections 3-222, 9-200, 9-208). Those certifications are then sent to the State Board for aggregation, certification and publication/posting.
